Start in Harbin's European quarter, follow the Yaxue Highway over the Zhangguangcai Range, spend a night on a heated kang in China Snow Town, cross Changbai Mountain to see the frozen Heaven Lake, and finish with a Korean-Chinese meal in Yanji. Seven days, one continuous line through the winter scenery the Northeast is known for.
A private vehicle throughout, with cars and hotels arranged to suit group size and season. You stay inside the Snow Town scenic area for one night and at a hot-spring hotel in Erdaobaihe. The order of days can be adjusted to your flight times and energy.
The cobbled Central Street, the green onion domes of Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Chinese Baroque courtyards of Laodaowai cover three eras of Harbin in a single day. After dark, the Ice and Snow World becomes a separate city of light.
Yabuli's beginner slope is gentle and the snow is reliable. Boots, skis, poles, jacket and goggles are all included, so nothing needs to be bought for a first attempt. Afterwards a forest train runs into the woods, and a snow-field hot spring waits in the evening.
The snow here is sticky and piles up on the roofs in mushroom shapes; the Bangchui Mountain boardwalk is the best place to look down on them. You sleep on a heated kang inside the scenic area, with the lanterns of Snow Rhyme Street at the door.
In winter the sides of Changbai Waterfall freeze into curtains of ice while the main flow still runs. Below, the Julong hot springs send up steam and the larches along the boardwalk are thick with rime. Whether the summit opens depends on the day's weather; if it does, the Tianchi vehicle goes straight up.
You can rent traditional dress and take photographs in the folk village, and buy kimchi and rice sausage by weight at the West Market. Shop signs run in Chinese and Korean side by side, and every meal starts with side dishes and rice wine.
Arrive in Harbin and transfer to your city hotel. The Ice and Snow World opens after 20 December, so an early landing means the ice castle is possible the same evening; Central Street and its night lights are within walking distance.
Harbin Ice and Snow WorldWalk the cobbles of Central Street in the morning and see the onion domes of Saint Sophia Cathedral, then follow the river past the Flood Control Monument and Stalin Park. In the afternoon visit the Chinese Baroque quarter in Laodaowai, where Western facades wrap Chinese courtyards.

Chinese BaroqueDrive to the Yabuli ski resort and ski the beginner slope for three hours with an instructor; boots, skis, poles, jacket and goggles are included. In the afternoon a forest train runs into the woods past the reindeer, and there is a snow-field hot spring before dinner.

A snowmobile carries you up Datudingzi Mountain for a view over the whole snow-covered forest. You reach Snow Town in the afternoon, when the light falls best on the snow mushrooms along Snow Rhyme Street.

Snow Town at NightGet up early for the Northeast country market, walk the Bangchui Mountain boardwalk for a view down over the snow mushrooms, and post a card from the Snow Town post office. In the afternoon cross the mountains to Erdaobaihe and check into a hot-spring hotel.
Snow Town at NightBegin at Moje at dawn, when mist lifts off the river and both banks are thick with rime. Then enter the north slope of Changbai Mountain: shuttle buses and the Tianchi vehicle climb to the summit for the frozen Heaven Lake, with Changbai Waterfall and the Julong hot springs below. Yanji by evening.

Julong Hot SpringsIn the morning rent traditional dress and take photographs in the Korean Folk Village, among the traditional courtyards and swings. Then visit the West Market, where kimchi, rice sausage and dried pollack can be vacuum-packed. Transfer to the airport, or return to Harbin by car.
