A classic 3-day Xiamen itinerary that strings together a Minnan temple, tropical plants, a World Heritage island and Jiageng-style architecture — unhurried, with incense and bookish charm on one side, sea breeze and colonial villas on the other.

Begin at South Putuo Temple, where the incense and vegetarian food of a thousand-year-old temple reveal Xiamen's quietest side. Then step into Wanshi Botanical Garden — mist drifting through the rainforest zone, desert plants in the succulent section, green hills all around, like a tropical crossing in the middle of the city. Take a ferry to Gulangyu and wander among villas built in the styles of many nations, visit the “hidden sea” garden of Shuzhuang and its piano museum, and let waves and music mingle. Finish at Jimei School Village and Ao Garden, following the red brick and white stone of Jiageng architecture, reading the story of Tan Kah Kee's philanthropy, and closing amid stone carvings and sea wind.

With South Putuo's Zen calm, the botanical garden's nature, Gulangyu's romance and Jimei's depth, this trip suits first-time visitors who love culture and slow travel.

Trip Highlights

01

South Putuo Temple · Incense and Vegetarian Food of a Minnan Temple

South Putuo is Xiamen's most-visited thousand-year-old temple, backed by Wulao Peak and facing the sea, its red walls and swallowtail ridges quiet among the trees. Walk through the Hall of Heavenly Kings and the Mahavira Hall, listen to the chanting and study the stone carvings, and the mind settles on its own. The temple's vegetarian dishes and cakes are a hidden bonus — South Putuo vegetarian cakes especially, flaky outside and fragrant inside, draw people from far away. Afterwards, climb a stretch of Wulao Peak for views over Xiamen University and the sea.

Wanshi Botanical Garden · A Tropical Rainforest and Succulent Kingdom in the City

Wanshi Botanical Garden is Xiamen's most surprising stop. The rainforest zone mists on a schedule, sunlight filtering through the spray onto banyans and aerial roots like a fairyland; the succulent area is planted with cacti, agaves and giant golden barrels, where any snapshot looks like a desert epic. The park is large, but a sightseeing shuttle links the main areas, so you can see tropical, subtropical and desert plants without a marathon walk — unmissable for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Gulangyu · World Heritage Villas and Slow Island Time

Gulangyu is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an island with no cars. More than a thousand old villas and buildings of many nations survive here — Gothic, Romanesque and Southeast Asian styles mixed together, like walking through a three-dimensional history book. Snacks along Longtou Road, piano music on street corners and bougainvillea in the sea breeze give this “Garden on the Sea” its romantic filter. There is no need to chase the sights; duck into any alley and you will find quiet old times.

Jimei School Village & Ao Garden · Jiageng Architecture and a Corridor of Stone Carvings

Jimei School Village is where Tan Kah Kee poured his fortune into education; red brick and white stone, swallowtail ridges and Roman columns look especially fine reflected in the Dragon Boat Pool. In the Guilai Hall and Tan Kah Kee's former residence you can read the life of the man called “the banner of overseas Chinese, the glory of the nation”. Ao Garden is Jimei's crowning touch: a long corridor of stone carvings records history and science, the Jimei Liberation Monument stands tall by the sea, and Tan Kah Kee's tomb rests quietly among them — the most substantial stop in Xiamen.
