The classic first five days — Harbin, Yabuli, Snow Town — then a flight from Harbin to Mohe, the northernmost corner of China, for the Arctic Village boundary stone, the wooden cabins of Santa Claus Village and the near-perfect Ω bend of the First Bend of the Heilongjiang River. Eight days from city ice lanterns to the snow forest at 53 degrees north.
A private vehicle throughout, with two nights in Harbin, one in Yabuli, one in Snow Town and two in Mohe. The Mohe leg is flown in both directions to avoid long overnight drives.
01
Harbin | The European quarter
The cobbled Central Street, the green onion domes of Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Chinese Baroque courtyards of Laodaowai cover three eras of Harbin in a single day. After dark, Ice and Snow World becomes a separate city of light.
02
Yabuli | Your first run on snow
Yabuli's beginner slope is gentle and the snow is reliable, with boots, skis, poles, jacket and goggles all included. Afterwards a forest train runs into the woods, and a snow-field hot spring waits in the evening.
03
China Snow Town | Snow mushrooms and deep eaves
The snow here is sticky and piles up on the roofs in mushroom shapes; the Bangchui Mountain boardwalk is the best place to look down on them. You sleep on a heated kang inside the scenic area.
04
Arctic Village | The northernmost village in China
The 'Northern Pole of China' stone, the Northernmost Family and the Northernmost Post Office all stand in the same stretch of snow in Arctic Village. Beyond it runs the main channel of the Heilongjiang River, with Russia on the far bank. In winter Mohe has only seven or eight hours of daylight, and the sun stays low all day.
05
First Bend of Heilongjiang | A frozen Ω
The Heilongjiang River swings through almost a full circle here. In winter the surface freezes solid and the whole outline of the bend shows against the white; a timber boardwalk climbs to the viewing platform — windy, but worth it.
