Panda Base CNY 55 and booked ahead, Dujiangyan and Qingcheng CNY 80 each. A 2026 Chengdu guide to booking, routing, hotpot and common mistakes.
Chengdu is deceptively easy to get wrong. It does not demand the advance booking gymnastics of Beijing, and its sights are not lined up on a single axis like Xi'an. The real risk is different: the city is so comfortable that you spend all your time in it, and then realise you missed the pandas at their active hour, skipped Dujiangyan, and only saw Leshan from a distance.
This guide is rewritten against 2026 prices, booking rules and transport changes. It divides Chengdu into three rings: the city centre, the northwest suburbs (Dujiangyan, Qingcheng Mountain) and the south (Leshan, Emei Shan), with two ready-made routes.
1. The Panda Base: the one thing worth waking up for
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding sits in Chenghua district. Tickets are CNY 55, the same all year, open 07:30 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00. It is the one Chengdu sight where timing decides everything, because panda activity tracks temperature.
- Why early matters: 07:30 to 09:30 is feeding time. Adults crunch bamboo, cubs tumble. After 10:00 the heat rises and most animals lie flat, leaving you with a black and white heap.
- Booking: real-name online booking only, through the official mini-program, released up to 14 days ahead with timed entry. In peak season the morning slots sell out on release day.
- Getting there: metro line 3 to Panda Avenue station, then a shuttle or ten-minute taxi to the south gate. From Chunxi Road a taxi is about CNY 40 and 30 minutes. Tourist shuttles also leave from several downtown points.
- Order inside: south gate, sub-adult villas (most active), moon and sun nurseries, adult villas, red panda area. Three to four hours. An internal shuttle costs CNY 10.
- Rules: no drones, no feeding, no tapping on glass. Strollers work but the site is hilly.
Alternative: Panda Valley at Dujiangyan also charges CNY 55, is quieter and closer to a natural setting. Good if you have already seen the main base; first-timers should still choose the base, which has far more animals.
2. The city ring: free sights and the few worth paying for
Downtown Chengdu is built around a temple, a thatched cottage, two alleys and a teahouse. A sensible split is one day for Wuhou Shrine, Jinli, Kuanzhai and People's Park, and another for museums and Chunxi Road.
- Wuhou Shrine: CNY 50, 09:00 to 18:00, book one to three days ahead. The red wall and bamboo corridor is the most photographed spot in the city; before 09:00 it is nearly empty. Jinli next door is free and better after dark.
- Du Fu Thatched Cottage: CNY 50, 09:00 to 18:00. A garden museum; bring mosquito repellent in summer.
- Kuanzhai Alleys: free. Three lanes: courtyards, food, and brickwork.
- Heming Teahouse in People's Park: CNY 15 to 30 for a cup, stay all afternoon. Ear cleaning is CNY 30 to 60 extra. This is the most honest two hours you can spend in Chengdu.
- Chengdu Museum: free, book seven days ahead, closed Mondays. The Han dynasty brick reliefs downstairs and the folk gallery upstairs are the highlights.
- Jinsha Site Museum: CNY 70, where the gold Sun Bird ornament was excavated. Allow half a day.
- Sanxingdui: not in Chengdu but in Guanghan, CNY 72. High-speed train from Chengdu East to Guanghan North takes about 20 minutes, then a 20-minute taxi. Book five to seven days ahead; tickets release at 20:00 and it is one of Sichuan's hardest reservations.
3. The northwest ring: Dujiangyan and Qingcheng
These two sit on one line. The intercity train from Chengdu to Lidui Park station (Dujiangyan) takes 30 to 40 minutes for about CNY 10, and is more reliable than driving.
- Dujiangyan: CNY 80, 08:00 to 18:00, book five days ahead. The irrigation system works through three parts: the Fish Mouth levee, the Flying Sand Weir and the Bottle-Neck channel. Hire a guide or an audio guide; without the principle explained it is just a river and some stone. Two to three hours.
- Qingcheng front mountain: CNY 80, one of the birthplaces of Daoism, with temples clustered on the slope. Cable car extra. Four hours on foot; most visitors ride up and walk down.
- Qingcheng back mountain: CNY 20, streams and waterfalls, rougher trails, slippery after rain. Better for younger travellers.
- Routing: Dujiangyan in the morning and Qingcheng front mountain in the afternoon is possible but rushed. Two days is far better, sleeping in Dujiangyan or Qingcheng town.
- Note: visitors over 65 are usually exempt from the gate fee but not from shuttles or cable cars. Carry your passport.
4. The south ring: Leshan and Emei Shan
- Leshan Giant Buddha: CNY 80 in high season; a river cruise to see the full figure is about CNY 70. One hour by high-speed train from Chengdu. The cliff stairway queue runs two hours on holidays; entering before 08:00 is the only real fix. Otherwise take the boat, 20 minutes, full view from the water.
- Emei Shan: CNY 160 entry, CNY 90 shuttle, Golden Summit cable car CNY 65 up and CNY 55 down. Reaching the summit takes a full day; sunrise requires sleeping on the mountain at Leidongping or the summit. It is more than 10 degrees colder up there, so bring a jacket even in summer.
- Monkeys: around Qingyin Pavilion they grab plastic bags and drinks. Do not carry food in your hand and zip your pack.
- Leshan and Emei in one day: only as far as Baoguo Temple at the foot. The Golden Summit needs two days.
5. Transport: two airports, and they are far apart
- Tianfu International (TFU): the new airport in Jianyang, about 50 km from the centre. Metro line 18 to Chengdu South railway station takes 40 to 50 minutes and is the most reliable option; a taxi is CNY 150 to 200 and about an hour. Most international flights use it.
- Shuangliu International (CTU): 14 km out, metro line 10 straight into town, taxi about CNY 50. Some domestic flights remain here.
- Railway stations: Chengdu East has the most services and metro line 2 to Chunxi Road; Chengdu South is convenient for Leshan and Emei; Chengdu West serves the Dujiangyan intercity line. Check which station your ticket names, because East to South is 30 minutes by metro.
- In town: metro CNY 2 to 8, payable by QR code; taxis start at CNY 9 by day and 10 at night; buses are CNY 2 but slow.
6. Eating: hotpot is a social event, not a meal
- Hotpot: CNY 80 to 120 per person. Ordering a split pot is normal, locals do it. Beef tripe is dipped seven times up and eight down, duck intestine ten seconds. The dip is sesame oil and garlic, not sesame paste.
- Skewer hotpot: priced by sticks, CNY 50 to 80 per person, lighter than full hotpot.
- Sichuan dishes: mapo tofu, twice-cooked pork, kung pao chicken. Old neighbourhood restaurants at CNY 50 to 80 per person beat the viral ones.
- Snacks: dumplings in chilli oil, wontons, sweet water noodles, egg waffles, CNY 8 to 15 each.
- Rabbit head: a drinking snack, five-spice or mala. Ask the shop to split it the first time.
- Teahouses: People's Park, Wangjiang Pavilion, Daci Temple, CNY 10 to 30 a cup with free refills.
- Warning: famous hotpot houses queue two hours at dinner. Go at 11:00 opening or after 15:00.
7. Sichuan opera and evenings
- Face changing: proper theatres around Qintai Road and Jinjiang Theatre charge about CNY 150 to 280 for face changing, fire spitting and shadow puppetry. Tourist-market shows vary in quality; stick to the established theatres.
- Jiuyanqiao and Lan Kwai Fong: bar streets, lively after 22:00.
- Yulin Road: small bars, barbecue and coffee mixed together, more real than the scenic districts.
- Taikoo Li and IFS: the climbing panda sculpture on the IFS wall is free to see and better lit at night.
8. Routing: five days, or a tight three
Five days and four nights (recommended for a first visit)
- Day 1: arrive, Kuanzhai Alleys, tea in People's Park, hotpot at night.
- Day 2: Panda Base at 07:30, Wuhou Shrine and Jinli in the afternoon, Sichuan opera at night.
- Day 3: Dujiangyan in the morning, Qingcheng front mountain in the afternoon, sleep in Dujiangyan or return.
- Day 4: Leshan Buddha on an early train, back to Chengdu for Taikoo Li and Jiuyanqiao.
- Day 5: Chengdu Museum or Jinsha, then depart.
Three days: city on day one, pandas plus Wuhou and Jinli on day two, Dujiangyan half a day on day three. Drop Leshan and Emei.
9. Seven common mistakes
- Arriving at the Panda Base at 10:00. The pandas are asleep; you have wasted the visit.
- Assuming Tianfu airport is close. It is 50 km out; allow 1.5 hours minimum.
- Fitting Sanxingdui into half a day. Transport plus visit is at least five hours, and tickets must be booked early.
- Leshan and the Emei Golden Summit in one day. Physically impossible, whatever the day-tour advertising says.
- Skipping the guide at Dujiangyan. Without the engineering explained, there is nothing to see.
- Eating only in Jinli and Kuanzhai. Those are tourist prices; locals eat in Yulin, Jianshe Road and Ma'anshan North Road.
- No jacket for Emei Shan in summer. The summit is 3,079 m; 30 degrees at the foot can be 10 at the top.
10. When to use a travel designer
Chengdu is easy to do independently, but three situations get complicated: travelling with elderly parents or small children, where the panda morning slot, the walking distance at Dujiangyan and the altitude at Emei all have to be budgeted; heading into western Sichuan (Siguniang, Daocheng Yading, Jiuzhaigou), which involves altitude acclimatisation and long drives; and pairing Chengdu with Chongqing, where the 1.5-hour rail link still requires the sightseeing slots to be staggered.
Jadetour most often builds Chengdu with Chongqing, or Chengdu in and Jiuzhaigou out, arranging the early panda slot, the Dujiangyan guide and the Emei overnight together. For dates and party size, start from custom tour; for a single ticket or booking question, contact us.
The short version: two alarms decide this trip, 07:00 for the pandas and 04:30 for Emei sunrise. Everything else can be taken slowly.
