About Chengdu

Chengdu has been standing for more than 2,300 years and has never changed its name. The Dujiangyan irrigation system has kept the plain free of flood and drought for two millennia, making this the heart of the “Land of Abundance”. Giant pandas are its irreplaceable signature — at the Chengdu Research Base arrive between seven and eight in the morning when feeding makes them most active, and book tickets in advance. In town, Kuanzhai Alley, the teahouses of People’s Park and Taikoo Li set the pace: sit for an ear-cleaning and an afternoon of tea and you have properly arrived. Hotpot and skewers are eaten with a sesame-oil dip; mild is plenty for most visitors. Nearby are Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng, then Leshan’s giant Buddha and Mount Emei. Two airports and the southwest’s biggest rail hub make Chengdu the gateway to western Sichuan. Allow three to four days.
