Lijiang In Depth: Winning the Yulong Cable Car, Choosing Among Three Old Towns, and Lugu Lake

The cable car releases only 10,000 places a day and must be booked 3–5 days ahead. Includes Dayan vs Shuhe vs Baisha, Blue Moon Valley, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Lugu Lake, and how to handle altitude.

Lijiang is one of the most misunderstood destinations in China. Its name has become shorthand for "commercial old town", but the real Lijiang has three layers: the old town (home of the Naxi people), the snow mountain (Yulong), and the lakes and gorges further out (Lugu Lake, Tiger Leaping Gorge). It is also the clearest case in China of "no advance ticket, no trip" — the Glacier Park cable car on Yulong Snow Mountain releases only 10,000 places a day.

The thing that matters most: winning a Yulong cable car ticket

Yulong Snow Mountain reaches 4,680 m, and the Glacier Park cable car is both the highlight and the hardest ticket to get:

  • Daily cap: roughly 10,000 people a day. In peak periods (July–August, National Day, Spring Festival) it often sells out the day it opens.
  • How to book: through the official "Lijiang Tourism Group" WeChat account or mini-program. Book three to five days ahead. For independent travellers this is job one in Lijiang, not something to arrange on arrival.
  • The climb: the cable car goes from 3,356 m straight to 4,506 m, then 174 m of steps to the 4,680 m viewing platform. Fast ascent with a big altitude gain is a classic trigger for altitude sickness.
  • Ticket structure: three separate components — mountain entry fee, park shuttle and cable car ticket. Group tours: confirm whether entry and shuttle are included, as these are often quoted separately.
  • If you cannot get one: switch to Yunshanping (small cable car) or Maoniuping — much lower, equally open views. But if the summit at 4,680 m is the whole point of the trip, move the dates rather than downgrade.

Altitude: the biggest difference from Jiuzhaigou

Lijiang's old town sits at about 2,400 m and is usually fine. But Yulong Snow Mountain lifts you from 3,356 m to 4,506 m in a matter of minutes — that is the issue. Around thirty percent of visitors get mild symptoms (headache, nausea, breathlessness). What to do:

  • Do the old town before the mountain. Do not schedule the mountain on arrival day; give yourself a day to acclimatise.
  • Do not go up hungry, and do not go up stuffed. Bring chocolate or glucose for quick energy.
  • Start breathing oxygen as the cable car climbs — not when you already feel unwell, by which time it is too late.
  • Warmth is the key defence. Cold causes blood vessels to constrict and worsens oxygen shortage. Bring a hat, gloves and a warm layer.
  • Move slowly throughout. Talk less, run not at all. Take the final 174 m of steps at the slowest pace you can manage.
  • Oxygen cans: buy from a proper pharmacy or a supermarket in the old town (about ¥20–30). Do not buy on the mountain, where prices are much higher, and avoid cheap roadside canisters of unknown origin.

The old towns: Dayan, Shuhe, Baisha

Lijiang has three old towns with completely different characters — and many visitors see only the most commercialised one and draw their conclusion there.

  • Dayan (what people mean by "Lijiang Old Town"): the largest and busiest, dense with bars and shops. Its value is in the lanes and in the early morning — the flagstones, water channels and carved doorways at 7 a.m. are a different place from 10 p.m.
  • Shuhe: about twenty minutes from Dayan, far quieter, with well-preserved waterways and old houses. Staying here is more comfortable than Dayan — better value for the same standard, and easier with luggage.
  • Baisha: the most untouched, home to the Baisha murals, rare survivals blending Ming-era Naxi, Tibetan and Han painting styles. The fewest visitors, and best for anyone who wants to look at things quietly.

On the old town maintenance fee: it has been cancelled — Lijiang Old Town is currently free to enter, with separate tickets for small sights such as the Mu Mansion and Wangu Tower.

Around the old town: Blue Moon Valley and Tiger Leaping Gorge

  • Blue Moon Valley: inside the Yulong scenic area and covered by the entry fee. The water runs blue-green, and with the snow peak behind it, it is the most photographed image in Lijiang. Usually combined with the mountain on the same day.
  • Ganhaizi and Baishui River: also within the scenic area, mostly stops along the way.
  • Tiger Leaping Gorge: where the Jinsha River cuts through the mountains — a world-class trekking gorge, about two hours from Lijiang. Upper Gorge (drive up and look) suits everyone; the Middle Gorge trail needs fitness and time.
  • Impression Lijiang: a large-scale outdoor show staged against the snow mountain — most efficiently slotted into the same day.

Lugu Lake: worth it or not

Lugu Lake is a highland lake inhabited by the Mosuo people, and the most underrated stop on a Lijiang itinerary. But it is five to six hours by road from Lijiang (it can also be reached from the Sichuan side), so:

  • With only three or four days, do not force it in — it squeezes Lijiang itself too thin.
  • With six days or more, give it two to three days and stay a night by the lake; the shoreline circuit and the early light are the whole point.
  • The lakeside road crosses from Yunnan into Sichuan, so a private car is the practical option.

When to go

  • March to May: the best window — clear weather, mountain flowers, and the snow line still substantial.
  • September to November: another golden stretch, with clear autumn air and the best visibility for photographing the mountain.
  • June to August: the rainy season, with frequent afternoon showers. The mountain is often cloud-covered and the summit can show you nothing at all — the main risk when booking the cable car.
  • December to February: the most clear days and the lowest snow line — the best mountain views. Nights are cold, and heating standards vary widely between old town guesthouses; confirm before booking.
  • Avoid: National Day and Spring Festival, when old town crowding and cable car difficulty both peak.

How to structure the trip: 3 days and 6 days

3-day core

  • Day 1: arrive → Dayan old town and the Mu Mansion → Lion Hill for the panorama at dusk (acclimatise).
  • Day 2: Yulong Snow Mountain (cable car + Blue Moon Valley) → Impression Lijiang in the evening.
  • Day 3: Shuhe old town or the Baisha murals → departure.

6-day extended

Add a day at Tiger Leaping Gorge and two to three days at Lugu Lake including a lakeside night. We already run "Lijiang + snow mountain + Lugu Lake" as a fixed itinerary — see the related tours section.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: Sanyi Airport is about 30 km from the old town; the airport bus costs around ¥20 to the old town area, taxis more. The rail station also has bus connections.
  • Where to stay: guesthouses inside the old town are mostly timber — poor soundproofing, damp, and hard work with luggage on flagstones. Choose a hotel on the edge of the old town or in Shuhe for better value and a better experience.
  • Clothing: dress in layers. A shirt is enough in the old town by day; the mountain needs a down jacket. The old town is all flagstones — wear flat, comfortable shoes.
  • Sun and dryness: UV runs three to four times the lowland level and the air is very dry. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, lip balm and moisturiser.
  • Eating: Naxi and Yunnan cooking — cured pork rib hotpot, chickpea jelly, Naxi grilled fish, Lijiang baba flatbread, and wild mushrooms (season June–September; eat them only in reputable restaurants).
  • Lashi Lake: if a "horse riding plus boating" package is offered, confirm exactly what is included and the total price first. This area has the highest concentration of consumer disputes in Lijiang; choosing a legitimate operator matters more than bargaining.

Common misconceptions

  • "Lijiang is just a commercial old town." The old town is only the first layer; the mountain and Lugu Lake carry the real weight.
  • "Buy the cable car ticket on the day." 10,000 a day, and in peak season a same-day ticket is effectively impossible.
  • "Lijiang is low altitude, no need to worry." The old town at 2,400 m is indeed low; being lifted to 4,506 m in minutes is a completely different matter.
  • "An old town guesthouse is the authentic stay." Timber walls, poor soundproofing and damp — and dragging luggage over flagstones is hard work. The edge of town or Shuhe is usually better.
