If winter had a hometown, it would be northern Xinjiang.
From the airport pickup in Urumqi the car joins the S21 Desert Highway — gobi on one side, deepening snow on the other, the city falling away behind as real winter opens ahead. Reaching Altay, don't rest yet: take the Jiangjun Mountain sunset cable car and watch the snow peaks burn gold-red in the low sun. The DJ party at the summit has already started, young people dancing and cheering in sub-zero air, snowboards and bass thrumming together. Want a night run? Buy a lift ticket and take a few more passes down the lit slopes.
Then Kanas. Rime coats every branch, Kanas Lake is a deep, dark blue, and Shenxian, Moon and Wolong bays lie under heavy snow like three ink-wash paintings. That night, a fairytale cabin in Hemu, thick snow on the roof, woodsmoke rising slowly from the chimney. The next day nothing is rushed — free time in Hemu, then in the evening to the sunset terrace for the blue hour as the sky goes from orange to indigo and the village lights come on one by one. If you still have energy, join the starry-sky bonfire party and dance around the fire with travellers from everywhere. Hemu at dawn is the quietest and most worth-waking-for scene of the trip. Then a complimentary 4-hour beginner ski session at Jikepulin — boots, board, poles and magic carpet all included; even a first-timer will end up laughing in the powder.
Leaving Altay, west to Karamay, then the full 360-degree drive around Sayram Lake. Xihai Grassland, Kele Yongzhu, S Bay and Songshutou — none skipped — plus a follow-car video that puts the highway and the blue ice in the same frame. Overnight by the lake, then re-enter the next morning for a sunrise walk. The surface is frozen blue ice, mist rising off the water, the Tianshan faint in the distance. Finally back across the Tianshan to Urumqi and the airport. Eight days, seven nights — from desert highway to snow-mountain party, from Kanas and Hemu to the blue ice of Sayram. A trip that plays winter to the limit: the thrill of skiing, the quiet of a snow village, the romance of blue ice and the warmth of a bonfire. North Xinjiang's winter is worth being cold for.
01
A Fairytale Cabin in Hemu
Spend the night in Hemu in a genuine fairytale cabin. Thick snow on the roof, woodsmoke from the chimney, and beyond the window snowfield, birch and distant peaks. Open the door at night to a sky full of stars; wake to snow-light. This feeling of living inside the snow is something no hotel can give you.
02
Jiangjun Mountain Sunset Cable Car
In the evening the Jiangjun Mountain cable car rises slowly, the setting sun staining the whole snow range gold-red, the snow surface warm with light and woodsmoke curling from the snow village in the valley. Higher and higher, the view opening wider — Altay's gentlest winter moment, and the one most worth freezing in a photograph.
03
Sayram Lake 360° Self-Drive Loop
Drive the loop of Sayram Lake and miss nothing — Xihai Grassland, Kele Yongzhu, S Bay, Songshutou. In winter the lake freezes to blue ice, the surface one enormous sapphire with snow peaks reflected in it, the highway winding along the shore. Every time you brake, there is a view.
04
Jikepulin Beginner Skiing — 4 Hours Included
A treat for ski lovers: the itinerary includes a complimentary 4-hour beginner ski session at Jikepulin with boots, board, poles and magic carpet. Even a complete first-timer will fall over laughing in the powder — the most energetic stop of the trip.
05
Kanas Rime and the Three Bays
Rime hangs from every branch along the way, like driving into a fairytale. Kanas Lake is dark blue, Shenxian, Moon and Wolong bays buried under snow, the river winding through the snowfield, morning mist rising off the water. The whole valley is an ink-wash scroll slowly unrolling, so quiet you can hear the snow land.
06
Starry-Sky Bonfire Night
Head out at night to the starry-sky bonfire party and dance, sing and talk around the fire with travellers from everywhere. The flames light every face; look up and the sky is dense with stars. In sub-zero air the warmth of the fire and the cold of the sky make a strange contrast — the liveliest and most healing night of the trip.
