One route that covers the two sights most worth seeing in a North Xinjiang winter in a single journey — the snow-village fairytale deep in Altay, and the blue-ice secret of Sayram Lake.
Start with a meet-up in Urumqi, airport pickup and a 4-star hotel, easing into North Xinjiang time. Then the S21 Desert Highway across the Gurbantunggut Desert, past Ulungur Lake and the much-photographed bridge, north to Burqin. Deeper still: Baihaba, the First Village of the Northwest, with the much-photographed S Bend, the solitary tree in the empty land and the China–Kazakhstan Grand Canyon; overnight in a snow-view cabin where you open the window onto snowfield and stars. Then Kanas Lake — Wolong Bay, Moon Bay, Shenxian Bay — for the stillness and otherworldliness of Kanas in winter. Hemu by evening, where a dedicated blue hour with thoughtful photo props and ambient lighting freezes the snow village in its best light; at night the Hemu bonfire, then a snow-view cabin. At dawn, sunrise mist over Hemu and the seasonal "throwing water into ice", plus an exclusive light photo-shoot and a once-in-a-lifetime frame with reindeer — a winter memory nobody else has. Then on to Karamay and a 4-star hotel.
The second half turns to Sayram Lake. From Karamay, drive the loop around the lake past Dianjiangtai, Kele Yongzhu, Xihai Grassland, S Bay and Songshutou, with blue ice, snow peaks and highway all the way, plus a Sayram-exclusive follow-car video that keeps every frame of the loop. Overnight at a 4-star hotel at the lake gate. The next morning re-enter Sayram and walk the shore at Moon Bay as mist lifts off the water and the blue ice glows in the early light, then back to Urumqi. On the last day, the airport transfer — home with the snow of Baihaba, the mist of Hemu and the blue ice of Sayram, carrying the two great winter treasures of North Xinjiang.
01
Baihaba — The Empty Land of the First Village
Walk into Baihaba and visit the famous S Bend, the solitary tree in the empty land and the China–Kazakhstan Grand Canyon. Snowfield, border river and distant peaks make up a silent winter painting — few visitors, vast sky and earth. It is the quietest stop of the whole journey, the one that most feels like the end of the world. Stay overnight in a Baihaba snow-view cabin; open the window onto snowfield and stars.
02
Hemu Photo Session + Water-to-Ice + Reindeer Frame
Try the seasonal "throwing water into ice" — scalding water turning to ice mist in mid-air, the most photogenic trick of a North Xinjiang winter. Then a Hemu-exclusive light photo session and a frame with reindeer, set against the snow village, birch woods and wooden cabins, for a winter memory nobody else has — and no scouting for angles yourself.
03
Kanas Three Bays — A Winter Ink Scroll
Step into winter Kanas and walk Wolong Bay, Moon Bay and Shenxian Bay. The water winds like an emerald ribbon between snow peaks and forest, morning mist rising off the surface, spruce mirrored in the green water — the whole valley an ink scroll slowly unrolling. The natural wonder of a North Xinjiang winter that cannot be missed.
04
Sayram Exclusive Follow-Car Video
On the Sayram Lake loop, the itinerary includes a Sayram-exclusive follow-car video. A drone or chase photographer records the convoy winding along the shore — blue ice, snow peaks, highway and vehicles in one frame; motion carries more impact than any still. Cut it together at home and every replay brings back the wind and the blue of Sayram.
05
Tuva Suor and Dombra — Music in a Snow-Village Cabin
On a Tuva family visit in Hemu or Kanas there is more than food — there is the suor, a low, far-carrying instrument made from reed or wood that sounds like an echo off distant mountains, used by Tuva ancestors to signal across the winter hunting grounds. The Tuva also play the dombra and the yessu; all three instruments are inscribed on the world intangible cultural heritage list. Sit in a snow-view cabin with a bowl of salty milk tea and a stretch of dombra, and you are closer to the breathing of this land than any staged performance could bring you.
