About Mount Fanjing

Fanjingshan rises in Tongren, Guizhou, the highest peak of the Wuling range at 2,572 metres. It is both a World Natural Heritage site and a famous Buddhist mountain, revered as the seat of Maitreya. The summit often breaks through a sea of cloud, looking like an island floating in the sky — hence its name, the City in the Sky. The Red Cloud Golden Summit is a near-vertical rock split by a fissure, with a temple on each side joined by a stone bridge; reaching the top means climbing a steep run of iron steps, though those uneasy with heights can watch from the platform below. A shuttle covers the distance from the gate to the cable car, which then lifts you above unbroken primary forest. Daily visitor numbers are capped, so book online in advance. Tongren Fenghuang Airport and Tongren South station are the main gateways, with Fenghuang Old Town nearby. Allow two to three days.
