About Xi'an

Xi’an, called Chang’an in ancient times, was the capital of thirteen dynasties including the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang, and the eastern start of the Silk Road. The Terracotta Army is its unmissable stop: over 8,000 figures stand in battle formation across three pits, no two faces alike — hiring a guide and avoiding the midday crush makes a real difference. The Ming city wall is China’s most complete ancient rampart; cycling the full loop takes about two hours, and waiting for the lights to come on at dusk is the best part. At night the Bell Tower and the Great Tang All Day Mall show another side of the old capital, while the Muslim Quarter is worth one meal of roujiamo, lamb paomo and biangbiang noodles. Xianyang Airport and Xi’an North railway station make it the gateway to the northwest. Allow two to three days, adding Mount Hua, Famen Temple or Hukou Waterfall.
