Yunnan lies in China's far southwest: the Hengduan Mountains and the Three Parallel Rivers in the northwest fall away to the rainforest of Xishuangbanna in the south, a drop of more than 6,000 metres that gives the province the richest range of climates and wildlife in the country. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the mirrored rice terraces of Yuanyang, the Cangshan range above Erhai Lake in Dali and the meadows and Tibetan monasteries of Shangri-La all sit here, home to more than twenty ethnic groups. Capital Kunming, at about 1,900 m, is known as the Spring City and is the main air gateway.
