China Train Ticket Refunds and Changes: 2026 Fees, Deadlines and How-To

Refunds are free 8 days ahead, then 5%, 10% and 20% as departure nears. Change fees, the 30-minute free window and Spring Festival rules explained.

The part of train travel in China that catches visitors off guard is not failing to get a ticket - it is the moment you have bought the wrong one, cannot travel, or need to move the date. Many assume a refund simply costs a small fee, when in fact a ticket becomes worthless the moment the train departs. Others do not know whether a changed ticket can still be refunded, or how much the change itself costs. The rules sit in China Railway's conditions of carriage and official notices; what has been missing is a plain-language version.

This guide sets out the 2026 rules: refund fees by tier, change rules, the free cancellation window for mistaken purchases, the special Spring Festival clause, how and where to process everything, a worked example, and the five traps foreign visitors fall into most often.

1. Three ground rules

  • Every deadline runs to the departure time. Once the departure date and time on the ticket have passed, it is a dead ticket and no refund is possible.
  • Refund fees are tiered, with a two-yuan minimum. The closer to departure, the higher the percentage.
  • A ticket may be changed only once. If you refund after a change, the fee is recalculated on the new ticket price.

2. Refund fee tiers in 2026

Time before departureRefund feeNotes
8 days or moreFree"Or more" includes the eighth day
Over 48 hours, under 8 days5% of the fareThe most common band
Over 24 hours, under 48 hours10% of the fareLate changes start to bite
Under 24 hours20% of the fareThe maximum rate
  • Rounding: fees are calculated in half-yuan units - anything below 0.25 yuan is dropped, 0.25 up to 0.75 is rounded to 0.5, and 0.75 or more rounds up to the next yuan.
  • Two-yuan minimum: if the calculated fee is under 2 yuan it is charged at 2 yuan; if the fare itself is under 2 yuan, the fee equals the fare.
  • How the money returns: the refund goes back through the original payment method. Tickets bought in cash or with a printed reimbursement document must be refunded at a station window.

3. Change rules: where it is free and where it is not

A change is always subject to availability - you cannot move onto a service that is already full. The rules divide by time:

When you applyWhat you move toFee
More than 48 hours before departureAny train within the sales windowFree
Less than 48 hours before departureThe same date or an earlier dateFree
24 to 48 hours before departureA later date5% of the lower of the two fares
Under 24 hours before departureA later date15% of the lower of the two fares
After departure, before midnight the same dayAnother train the same dayFree
After departure, before midnight the same dayA train the next day or later40% of the lower of the two fares
  • Changing the destination station must be done more than 48 hours before departure, and any checked luggage must be amended or cancelled first.
  • If the new ticket is cheaper, the difference is refunded, but the standard refund fee is charged on that difference.
  • Tickets changed after departure cannot be refunded, and tickets paid for with loyalty points cannot be refunded at all.

4. New in 2026: the free window for mistaken purchases

This is the most useful new rule of the year. Since 19 January 2026, if you buy through the 12306 platform and realise you picked the wrong ticket, you can cancel online at no cost provided both conditions are met:

  • you submit within 30 minutes of successful payment, and
  • it is still more than 4 hours before departure.

Three caveats: each purchaser may use this once per calendar day; changed tickets, reservation purchases and waiting-list tickets are excluded; and refunds made within the normal free period do not consume the allowance. It applies to domestic passenger services and to cross-border services starting or ending at West Kowloon in Hong Kong, China.

5. Spring Festival and peak-period rules

  • The fee jumps to the ceiling: if a ticket has already been changed and the new travel date falls within the Spring Festival period, any later refund is charged at the under-24-hour rate - 20% of the fare - regardless of how early you apply.
  • A long peak season: the 2026 Spring Festival travel period runs from 2 February to 13 March, forty days, with around 539 million rail passenger trips expected. Tickets on popular routes are tight and refunds and changes are frequent.
  • Waiting-list tickets are bound by the same rules: a confirmed waiting-list booking counts as a purchase, and its refund follows the same 20% rule if the travel date falls in the Spring Festival period.
  • Practical advice: for Spring Festival and the October National Day holiday, lock your dates in more than eight days ahead and the refund cost drops to zero.

6. Where and when you can process it

  • Online: the 12306 website and app, for tickets paid electronically with no printed reimbursement document. The site handles queries and refunds around the clock; ticket sales and changes run from 05:00 to 01:00 the next day, and on Tuesdays from 05:00 to 23:30.
  • Station window: required for cash purchases, tickets with a printed reimbursement document and tickets bought on third-party platforms. If someone acts for you, both parties' identity documents are needed.
  • Ticket machines: some stations have self-service machines with a change function, usable for e-tickets without a printed reimbursement document.
  • Reimbursement proof: after a refund you can collect the fee receipt at a station window within 180 days using the identity document used to purchase, and fully digital electronic invoices are now used across the network.
  • Official channels only: third-party platforms have no authority to change tickets, must ultimately route through 12306, and carry risks of data leaks and failed refunds.

7. A worked example: what a 553-yuan ticket gives back

When you refundCalculationFee charged
10 days before departureWithin the 8-day-or-more band0 yuan
60 hours before departure553 x 5% = 27.65, rounded to the nearest half yuan27.5 yuan
30 hours before departure553 x 10% = 55.3, rounded up to the half yuan55.5 yuan
5 hours before departure553 x 20% = 110.6, rounded to the half yuan110.5 yuan

In other words, on the same ticket, refunding ten days early versus five hours early is a difference of more than a hundred yuan. If your plans wobble, act early.

8. Five traps foreign visitors fall into

  • Trap one: assuming a third-party platform can change or refund. They cannot; the request still ends up at 12306, with added mark-ups and data risk. Use only the official 12306 website and app, station windows and ticket machines.
  • Trap two: printing a reimbursement document and expecting an online refund. Cash purchases and tickets with a printed reimbursement document can only be handled at a window, and the document must be handed back.
  • Trap three: leaving it until after departure. No refund is processed after the train leaves, and a ticket changed after departure cannot be refunded either.
  • Trap four: assuming you can change repeatedly. One change per ticket. A second adjustment means refunding and buying again, at the refund rate then in force.
  • Trap five: ignoring the cross-border and Spring Festival clauses. Tickets to or from West Kowloon follow cross-border agreements rather than the mainland rules, and refunds on changed tickets during the Spring Festival period are charged at 20%.

9. Keeping refund risk to a minimum

Stripped down, the rules say three things: book early rather than late, use official channels rather than third parties, and remember that a change is a one-time option. If a trip mixes several rail legs, an overnight sleeper and a flight, a change on one leg ripples through everything after it. Jadetour's tailor-made itinerary service flags the date by which each ticket genuinely has to be locked in, and re-sequences the surrounding legs when plans move, so you never run out of change rights and have to refund and repurchase. Our Chongqing team also knows the window and self-service facilities at each station in southwest China and will tell you in advance which documents to bring if you need to handle something in person.
