A Thousand Years of Trade · Dim Sum & Lingnan Arcades

About Guangzhou

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong and has been China’s most important foreign-trade port since the Qin and Han dynasties — two thousand years of uninterrupted commerce, hence its name, the merchant capital of a millennium. Morning tea is the city’s defining ritual: a pot and two dim sum, with shrimp dumplings, siu mai, rice rolls and egg tarts filling the table, the point never being only the food. Old establishments open at seven; on weekends take a number early. The old town holds the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall’s brick carvings and the arcades of Yongqingfang and Shamian, while Zhujiang New Town and Canton Tower show the other face, with a night cruise on the Pearl River the classic finish. Baiyun Airport and Guangzhou South station make it South China’s gateway — Shenzhen in thirty minutes, Hong Kong West Kowloon in an hour. Allow two to three days.
