About Guilin
Guilin sits in northeastern Guangxi, at the heart of China’s most famous karst landscape: limestone peaks rise straight out of the plain and the Li River winds between them, giving the word “landscape” its most literal meaning here. Board at Mopanshan pier and drift four to five hours to Yangshuo — the view on the back of the 20-yuan note comes from the Xingping stretch, so take a seat on the upper deck’s right side. Yangshuo’s Yulong River rafts and the Longji rice terraces are the other two musts; Ping’an and Jinkeng each have viewing platforms, best reached before sunrise. Order Guilin rice noodles the local way: dry-tossed first, broth after. Two airports and a high-speed rail station link Guilin with Guangzhou, Guiyang and Nanning, and Yangshuo is ninety minutes away. Allow three to four days; April to October has the fullest water, autumn gilds the terraces.
